Exceptional historical evidence of Magna Graecia and later periods, the archaeological area of Agrigento was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The remains of the Greek and then Punic-Roman city, the imposing Doric temples, the agora, the necropolis and the dense network of underground aqueducts, make up a rich, roughly 3200-acre site that tells a story lasting thousands of years, began in the 6th century B.C. with the foundation of the ancient Greek colony of Akragas. Return to the hotel at lunchtime.

ETNA AND TAORMINA / Full day

Our journey takes us to Etna, the highest volcano in Europe. Arrival at Etna Sud, Rifugio Sapienza (C.A.I.) at an altitude of 6200 feet. Free time for the many walks of varying difficulty that Europe's highest active volcano offers: ascent with all-terrain vehicles to an altitude of 9800 feet, accompanied by authorised guides (lasting about 2 hours), guided walks to an altitude of 6900 feet (lasting about 2 hours), free walks to the extinct craters at an altitude of 6200 feet. Continuation to Taormina, pearl of the Mediterranean, suspended like a flowery balcony over the Ionian Sea and defining the bay of Giardini Naxos. Taormina is famous for its climate, its rich vegetation, its superb palaces, its elegant squares and its panoramic position about 660 feet above sea, at the foot of Monte Tauro. Arrival at Porta Messina and free time to visit the old town, shopping on Corso Umberto and, last but not least, a visit to the super-panoramic Teatro Antico. Return to the hotel in the afternoon.

Passing through the Madonie Natural Park, stop in Gratteri, 2300 feet above sea. In its fortunate position, surrounded by small mountains and hills, it sits like an eagle's nest on the rocks, looking down on an endless, enchanting panorama and is a destination for tourists who appreciate its pure air, boundless greenery and silence. We go on to the shrine of Gibilmanna, perched on Pizzo Sant'Angelo. The shrine, at a height of 2600 feet in a forest of oak and chestnut trees, is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It was one of the six sanctuaries created by Gregory the Great in the 6th century. In a chapel, a fresco depicting the Madonna and Child in Byzantine style is worth seeing. Departure for Castelbuono, which owes its origins to the Ventimiglia family, lords of the county of Geraci. Stroll through the picturesque old town and tasting of specialities at the renowned Fiasconaro pastry shop, where taste and tradition blend harmoniously. Visit to the Ventimiglia Castle, an ancient noble house, and the beautiful Chapel of Santa Anna. Return to the hotel before dinner.

PALERMO AND MONREALE / Full day

Arrival at Monreale and meet with the local guide. Visit to the superb Cathedral of Monreale, an architectural masterpiece of the Norman age, in which expressions of Islamic, Byzantine and Romanesque culture combine to create one of the highest expressions of the Italian Middle Ages. The interior is of great splendour and majesty. The walls of the naves, the sanctuary and the apses are all covered in gold mosaics, such as the colossal half-length figure of Christ Pantocrator. Optional visit to the cloister. Continue on to Palermo, the provincial and regional capital. Stroll through the historic centre to discover the city's main monuments, rich in Byzantine, Arab-Norman and Baroque architecture. Visit Piazza Pretoria, the church of La Martorana and the cathedral. Through the narrow streets of the traditional Capo Market, arrival at Piazza Verdi in front of the Teatro Massimo. In the early afternoon, panoramic tour of the city with a stop at Piazza Marina. Continue to the convent of the Capuchin friars and optional visit to the connected catacombs. Return to the hotel in the afternoon.

Cefalù is a very old town and is even said to have been founded a thousand years before the birth of Christ. After several c olonisations and numerous feudal struggles, the town managed to emerge as a trading centre and more recently has become a popular tourist destination.
Strolling along Cefalù's seafront is a pleasant thing to do of an evening. With beautiful beaches and a buzzing nightlife, it's very popular with young people and tourists and there is no shortage of places to have fun. Many Italians and foreigners like to spend their holidays in Cefalù, attracted by the intense nightlife, which will certainly not disappoint. Most of the clubs are concentrated on the Lungomare promenade, where you can spend hours of pure enjoyment.

An enchanting contrast between the breathtaking blue of the sea, with the two famous stacks of Petra Lunga and Petra Menalda, and the white of the pumice mountains. The old town on the island is picturesque, with the acropolis that is home to the castle, cathedral of San Bartolomeo, archaeological park and Luigi Bernabò Brea Regional Aeolian Archaeological Museum. Departure from Lipari at 1.15 p.m. Arrival at Vulcano at 1.30 p.m. Vulcano is an island of relaxation and wellbeing, thanks to the therapeutic properties of its natural sulphurous mud baths. It owes its name to volcanic phenomena like fumaroles and jets of steam, which are visible from both land and water. Impossible to resist a dip in the black beaches or the evocative landscapes by climbing the Gran Cratere or visiting La Valle dei Mostri and the Grotta del Cavallo. It's one of the most striking places thanks to its crescent beach of black sand, topped by caves set in the rock. Salina is the greenest of the Aeolian Islands, famous as the setting of the film Il Postino
(1994). Colourful fishing boats on pebble beaches, hills covered with wild capers and Malvasia vines. Departure from Salina Rinella at 12.30 p.m. Arrival at Filicudi at 1.15 p.m. Filicudi boasts unparalleled views and sunsets. Reaching the exclusive Monte Guardia, you can enjoy a unique and inimitable view of the evocative landscapes of the other six islands and the Sicilian coastline all together. Filicudi is home to the Lipari Archaeological Museum, which houses prehistoric finds testifying to a flourishing obsidian stone working industry. Departure from Filucudi at 3.45 p.m. Arrival at Alicudi at 4.20 p.m. Alicudi, wild and inaccessible at least to cars, preserves its unspoilt nature. The island has a jagged coastline and no tarmacked roads and can only be explored by mooring a boat in the town and traversing its paths on foot or donkey. The Scoglio Galera on the western coast of the island is imposing, while the small houses of Contrada Tonna display typical Aeolian architecture. The old town is a colourful painting of deep blue sea and snow-white houses that light up the narrow alleys leading to the Church of San Pietro and the Archaeological Museum. Sunbathing in the beautiful bay of Cala Junco or the sandy beach of Cala degli Zimmari is an exclusive luxury. Departure from Panarea at 4.15 p.m. Arrival in Stromboli at 4.45 p.m. Stromboli is a unique island, home to one of the world's most active volcanoes. There is breathtaking scenery at night, when the fire of the eruptions and the darkness collide, giving rise to ever new creations of colours on the Sciara del Fuoco.
